Duration: 12 to 18 months.

Weekly effort: Six to Eight hours per week.

This course has 6 modules which must all be successfully completed to obtain this qualification.

Module 1: Financial Statements

Module 2:  Budgeting

Module 3: Financial Performance

Module 4: Internal Control and Accounting Systems

Module 5: Personal Tax

Module 6: Business Tax

Candidates applying for the MAT(SA) membership will also need to complete a Professional Ethics module.


Admission requirements

National Senior Certificate with Maths Literacy (NQF 4) giving access giving access to certificate study at higher education level.

Or

FET Certificate: Accounting Technician (NQF 4) qualification or an equivalent NQF 4.

 It is assumed that the learners accessing this qualification are competent in language, literacy, communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 4.


This course is for you if: 

Students who successfully complete this qualification will be able to:

  • Register as a “Member of the Accounting Technicians South Africa” (MAT(SA) with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants 1-2 years of tax and accounting work experience
  • Register with an RCB and as a Tax Practitioner with SARS (in conjunction with 4 years of tax work experience)
  • Start a small practice and confidently draft financial statements for small enterprises, manage budgets, and evaluate financial performance for clients.
  • Work in a company as a Senior Bookkeeper, Financial Assistant, Accounts Manager, Financial Controller, Junior Accountant, Assistant Finance Manager, or Payroll Manager.

Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Draft and interpret limited company financial statements
  • Prepare forecasts and budgets
  • Collect, analyse and disseminate information about costs
  • Monitor performance and make recommendations to enhance value
  • Understand the principles of internal control and evaluate accounting systems
  • Calculate income tax from all sources of income for an individual and finalise and Individual’s  tax returns (ITR12)
  • Prepare Business Taxation, capital allowance computations, assessable business income, capital gains and Corporation Tax computations.
  • Apply general principles and behaviours of ethical working in accountancy 

Accreditation

The Tax Faculty (NPC) has been accredited as an Academic Provider of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) to deliver the Accounting Technician qualifications. Academic Provider Number: ATTF0066/0524

The qualification is registered on SAQA (SAQA ID: 80189) at an NQF Level 5.


Assessment and award of certificate

Final assessments are completed online per module on the AT(SA) platform in an invigilated environment. AT(SA) qualifications are competency-based, meaning learners must demonstrate competence in each module based on minimum standards.

 A learner is deemed to be Competent or Not Yet Competent in the module. Upon completion of the qualification, learners will receive the Certificate: Accounting (SAQA ID 80189) issued by SAICA, and a Statement of Results detailing the units of learning completed.


Student support and online campus

The course content is delivered on The Tax Faculty's online Tax Campus, whilst the exams per module are delivered via the AT(SA) platform.

This will be your virtual campus for the duration of the programme. The course is presented as micro-learning videos, study guides, practice quizzes, practical case studies and assignments for each module. Academic lecturers are available on the Q&A portal as they would be in a classroom.

At the beginning of each programme you'll be presented with the course content plan, a study plan and important assignment dates which are set out at manageable deadlines. Learners deemed competent in the module assignment, may progress to the final summative assessment per module.  This will help you study at your own pace and ensure success within the twelve to eighteen months.

In addition, you will be allocated a course consultant who will help you navigate the online campus, support you with your weekly participation and deadlines, and will be able to answer any administrative queries you may have.
